In the early 1990s, CLAMP attended a dinner celebrating the release of the Soryuden novels, for which they had done the illustrations. They were seated beide Yamanouchi Hideki, the then editor of Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine, who asked if they were be interested in working on a series for Nakayoshi.
Given no direction to follow, they decided to create something completely new, with giant robots.
Magic Knight Rayearth debuted in Nakayoshi’s 1993 November issue and ended in the 1996 April issue, and was reprinted in six collected volumes with only minor changes made to the original.
Those volumes have gone on to be translated into over a dozen different languages around the world and are still finding new audiences today.
